These new Stadler FLIRT trains are called bimodal BMU trains. It works as an electric EMU train where ever the overhead catenary wire is available and in
electric mode it can reach speeds of up to 160 km/h. But where the lines are not electrified it runs with its own diesel which is located in the small
"powerpack" wagon in its middle. In diesel mode its top speed is 140 km/h. These new trains are ownwd by the regional authorities of Valle d'Aosta, which
is a French speaking autonomous area within Italy. But the trains are operated by Trenitalia's personnel. They run now on the route from Torino up to Aosta,
most of the way with 3 kV DC, but nearing the capital of the autonomous region, they run with diesel just like we see in this picture.
Picture is from near the station of Aosta as this FLIRT was approaching the station. The picture was taken by Ilkka Siissalo 11.5.2023.
