The island of Rügen is a famous summer holiday destination on the eastern German Baltic Sea coast. There is a 59 km long stretch of 750 mm narrow gauge track between Altefähr (old ferry) to Göhren. Traffic is maintained using historic steam locomotives and old coaches, some of which are over 100 years old. Current operator of the service is Pressnitztalbahn PRESS and during summer months the old train runs every two hours, on part of the route even once an hour. The train is also known as Rasender Roland.
Here one of the class Br99 steam engines is bringing the Rasender Roland to the station of Binz LB. Picture by Bengt Halme 9.7.2014.

During summer monts the trains of the Rasender Roland are long and often quite full. This has developed into one of Europe's most famous railroad holiday destinations.

Many of the coaches used in the Rasender Roland trains are from the communist period of East Germany. This post wagon even has still the "DR" sign of communist DDR's state railways. But some of the coaches are from the 1800s. The railway was first opened in 1895.

Br99 no.1781 belongs to the East German DR's class Br99.77-79. These are copies of old steam machines built by DR 1952 to 1956 for the narrow gauge railways in Sachsen.

de-ruebb-br251-putbus-090714-bengthalme-full.jpg

Another view of the same class Br251 diesel locomotive. This machine belonged originally to the class V51 of the West German DB. Only three locomotives were made in 1964 and the intention was to push aside all remaining 750 mm narrow gauge steam locomotives left in West Germany. The result is now that this one works not in the west, but in the east, and it has not pushed aside, but is merely assisting the old steam engines.

de-ruebb-dr_coaches-putbus-030713-full.jpg

These "Kaiser Zeit" coaches from the 1800s were used on the line until 2004. Now they are waiting for a possible total renovation. Unfortunately this coach 971-212 is no longer listed at RüBB.
Picture from Putbus station 3.7.2013 by Ilkka Siissalo.

de-ruebb-971_214-putbus-030713-full.jpg

This very old coach 971-214 is no more listed at the RüBB, so it must be either sold or scrapped, but a similar coach no.971-216 is still there. It was built in 1897 in Görlitz. This one must be from the same year or earlier. In the beginning it did not have modern pressurised air brakes, but instead the metal wires that still can be seen on the roof activated the modest braking systems.

de-ruebb-koef6003-putbus-030713-full.jpg

The small Köf 6003 is a Heeresfeldbahnlokomotiv or military narrow gauge locomotive of the type HF 130 C. They were built by Nazi Germany for the use in second world war. After the war it replaced steam locomotives on the 750 mm line on Rügen.

de-ruebb-28-putbus-030713-full.jpg

Every Rasender Roland train has typically one or two cargo or postal wagons attached, even if there is normally no real need for it. The wagon no.28 was built by HAWA in 1911 and it used to be a brown "Salonwagen" for passengers before being rebuilt for baggage wagon use.

de-press-rs1-putbus-030713-full.jpg

The operator of the Rasender Roland, Pressnitztalbahn PRESS, also operates a short normal gauge rail line called RB26 (Regionalbahn 26), Bergen – Putbus – Lauterbach – Lauterbach Mole. The whole line is normally operated by just one railbus. It is a Regioshuttle RS1 number Br650 032, seen here at the station of Putbus.

A very typical crane of the DDR times (GDR, German Democratic Republic). This is one of the few still in use and this one is used for loading coal into the steam locomotives.
