Since Estonia regained its independence and until 2013 all domestic long distance passenger traffic inside Estonia
was taken care by the company Edelaraudtee (southern railroad). The trains were old Soviet time diesel multiple units of the types DR1,
DR1A and DR1B. But when Estonia in 2013 got new Swiss FLIRT trains, they were all given for the company Elektriraudtee, which
previously had only operated the Tallinn suburban electric railways. Elektriraudtee was renamed Elron and it pushed Edelaraudtee
out of business from all its key routes. Only some cargo trains and infrastructure works remained. The old Soviet DR1 diesel units
were later sold to Tadzhikistan.
This picture is from June 2013 when Edelaraudtee still operated all longer distance passenger trains. This is a DR1B unit. They were
built by Rīgas Vagonbūves Rūpnīca in Riga, Latvia from 1963 onwards. Top speed was 120 km/h. Typical composition was one engine wagon,
one steering cab wagon and two middle coaches. Picture at Tallinn Balti jaam station 9.6.2013 by Ilkka Siissalo.
