This is actually a German train in Germany, but is shown here, because their route regularly extends to Salzburg in Austria. This is a Stadler built Flirt of the BLB or Berchtesgadener Landesbahn en route from Salzburg, Austria to just across the border Berchtesgaden, Germany, also known for the "eagle's nest" castle of der Führer Adolf Hitler. This is also history by now. German DB operates the rail line from München into Austria on the so called Ausserfernbahn running between the two German towns Kempten and Garmisch-Partenkirchen, but in doing so, entering for a while Austrian territory. This is a prototype German Br628.0 stopping at the winter ski resort station of Bichlbach-Berwang 25.4.2002. These were very rare trains indeed - and now scrapped. For comparison: This kind of trains operate on the same route(s) in 2024 which used to be operated by the old Br628.0 diesel railbuses shown above. Technically this picture is actually not from Austria, but very near. The mountains in the background already are. The Ausserfernbahn line has now been electrified and the trains now running the passenger services are these second generation Talent trains made by what used to be Bombardier (now Alstom). This is a Br 2442 Talent with four coaches, mostly low-floor. Quite an improvement in service quality for the passengers compared with how things used to be in 2002.

This is a Bombardier TRAXX locomotive Br185.0 of the very first generation. The shape of its front looks slightly different than in the newer TRAXX machines as this one does not yet have the crash-proof elements in its front. Here we see it with a long timber train of DB Cargo. Note how it uses its front pantograph and not the one in the aft as usual. The reason for this was that the timber in the carriages was very dry and the driver tries to avoid sparks flying onto the easily ignitable trunks.

RegioJet is a private Czech rail operator, which started within the Czech Republic as a cheaper competitor of the state railways, but which has now extended its operations also to Slovakia and Austria. This is a Siemens Vectron locomotive of the German class Br193, leased by RegioJet from the leasing company ELL.

Slovakian state railways ZSSK's new Vectron, class 383, similar to the German class Br193, has brought an express train from Slovakia to Austria.

Swiss locomotives regularly pass through small parts of Austria, for example here a service from Zürich to the German city of Lindau passing through Bregenz in Austria. The locomotive is a regular Swiss SBB class Re4/4 II, but with a special pantograph to suit the Austrian and German standards. Picture at Bregenz station 30.3.2002 by Ilkka Siissalo. The lady in the picture is rail photographer Sanna Siissalo, and the dog, terrier Tau, also visited stations doing trainspotting/trainsniffing in 17 countries before it passed away.

The Meridian service is part of Bayerisches Oberlandbahn BOB, a German company, which belongs to the French Transdev group of private companies. BOB won in a public tendering a set of passenger service lines, including a service from München in Germany to Salzburg in Austria. The trains used are third generation Stadler Flirt units.
