Adminlog
User's Guide

Adminlog is a file oriented software system for maintaining the status of a
complex computer system. It is designed to be very easy to use and therefore it
invites system administrators to always make a note when they have done any
essential rearrangements on the computer system; modifications to the
user/group databases, installation of new software applications, modification of
global files, backups, and so on. Today many multi-user systems suffer from
lacking information between different system managers and administrators and
Adminlog is the ultimate answer to this problem. Also, Adminlog is the perfect
tool to document the entire lifetime of a computer system - from initial
installation to the time when it will be put away.

Installation
Adminlog should already be configured at your site. The head administrator has made
two startup-commands; one for reading log-entries from the Adminlog database and
one for writing a new entry to the database. The default names for these commands
are 'readlog' and 'writelog', respectively. If the main administrator chose to
name these commands to other names, please write them down here:

*	Command to read entries from the Adminlog database:

*	Command to write a new entry to the Adminlog database:

Reading Entries
Simply give the 'readlog' command to the command-interpreter and the system
should start in read mode. The system first checks if you're an authorized user and
then the last entry is printed on the screen through a pager. When an entry is read,
there will show up four lines giving you further instructions:

=> This was ENTRY #121 out of 121 entries.
=> Press <ENTER> for next entry.
 => Press <NUMBER> + <ENTER> to go to ENTRY #<NUMBER>.
 => Press <CTRL><C> to quit.

The first line shows you which number the entry had and how many entries there are
in the database. The second line informs you that if you press <ENTER>, the next entry
will show up. If your current entry was number one (1), the program will terminate.
The third line makes it possible to jump directly to an entry, whose number is
<NUMBER>. If you type '117' followed by <ENTER> your current entry will be number
117 and it might look like this:

------------------------------------------------------------
   ENTRY: 117
SUBJECT: Changed default printer for group 'users'
    USER: Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart
    DATE: 1994-01-01
    TIME: 15:50:31
------------------------------------------------------------

As there have been numerous "accidental" printing on
the expensive Postscript-printer, I've changed the
default printer for group 'users' from QMSPS to NULL.
The latter points to '/dev/null' and won't do any harm.
Inform your few employees who actually do serious printing
that they must set up their LPDEST variable manually!

=> This was ENTRY #117 out of 121 entries.
=> Press <ENTER> for next entry.
 => Press <NUMBER> + <ENTER> to go to ENTRY #<NUMBER>.
 => Press <CTRL><C> to quit.

The last line gives you an opportunity to exit the program whenever you want. Hold
down the <CTRL> key and type the letter 'c'.

Reading Entries
Simply give the 'writelog' command to the command-interpreter and the system
should start in write mode. The system first checks if you're an authorized user and
then you will be prompted for the subject (header) of your message. Type in a short,
but informative subject and confirm it by pressing <ENTER>. When you pressed
<ENTER>, the program will continue and a text editor will be spawned (started from
within the Adminlog system). In the editor's buffer there will already be a couple of
lines and it might look like this:

------------------------------------------------------------
   ENTRY: 122
SUBJECT: Changed default printer for group 'users'
    USER: My Full Name
    DATE: 1994-01-05
    TIME: 09:06:22
------------------------------------------------------------

This implies that your number was assigned to '122' because the last existing
message was '121'. The SUBJECT line is the subject you typed in a second ago. The
USER line is your full name as stated in a file called 'users.ini', which the main
Adminlog administrator takes care of. Please ask him/her if you're not satisfied with
your full name! The DATE and TIME lines shows the current date and time reported
by the system. When you go on writing the entry's body (your text) you have to move
down the insertion point, which often is marked as a pipe '|' or underscore '_'. In
most editors this is done by pressing the arrow-keys on your keyboard. Consult the
documentation for your site's editor if you are uncertain. When you are satisfied with
your message you just save the message and exit the editor. When exiting you will be
returned to the Adminlog program and it will print your complete message on the
screen through a pager. When you have read your entry the Adminlog program will
exit.

Individual Configuration
If you aren't satisfied with the default editor and pager, there may be a chance to
change these. Please ask your Adminlog administrator if this is possible and how to
make it.

Evaluation Copy
In order to get the feel of what Adminlog may give you and your corporation, there
are evaluation copies available for all platforms. If you get an Evaluation Copy it'll
expire on a certain date and you are only admitted to put ten entries into the database,
but on the other hand you get the chance to evaluate the program "at home". If you
later decide to get a "real" licence you only have to change two lines in the
configuration file and off you go! You don't have to re-install the product. The
Evaluation Copies are free of charge (a small fee for covering the distribution costs
may occur) and will be available at various ftp-sites, bbs'es and dealers.
