Subject: Pictures of the kites in the review FAQ
Hi.
I find the kite review FAQ very helpful in finding kites that one would
like to get.
What I think would make it even more usable would be to have a picture
of each of the reviewed kites in the archive (Posting them regularly
would of course cause to much bandwidth).
It wouldn't have to be a big one, just some very small thing, e.g. in
JPG format.
For the kites I have pictures of (mostly as ads in magazines) I could
make scans. I could also scan pictures for people not having access to
a scanner.
What do you think about the idea?

Provided hawaii and it's mirrors weren't worried about resources ( and I
guess we're only talking 20 - 50k per image here, maybe 100 images => worst
case 5M ), I'd say go for it !

Wonderful idea if they could be left on an ftp site for retrieval when
wanted.

Yes, but people who take alt.binaries.pictures are prepared for massive
bandwidth. On the other hand, the *only* group that I recieve is rec.kites,
which I get by long-distance phone call. If rec.kites were to suddenly
fill with gifs, it would cost me money! On the other hand, creating
alt.binaries.pictures.kites for this purpose may well be a perfectly
reasonable proposal.
[Personally, I pick up the pictures for zero cost from Hawaii by a
different route - thanks Kevin]

I don't think it's necessary. Even JPGs consume some space if there are
enough. Only a few pics already consume more space than the FAQ itself.
But when the pics are available, there should be a pointer to the archive
in the review FAQ.
I will start scanning next weekend, probably.

Possibly if they are taken from some catalog there may be a copyright on
the catalog, but if you take pictures of a kite in the air it surely can't
be copyrighted by anyone but yourself. (ie. the picture that is)
I doubt the catalog is copyrighted...check the front/back of the catalog....

Not only that, but even if they are (C), they just might let you
redistribute them so long as you leave the name of the company on the
picture (depending on how retentive their lawyers are. :> )

In many countries photographs _are_ protected by a strong
copyright law. rec.kites is wrong place to discuss "why".

I you are scanning your own photographs, then copyright matters
are undoubtly solved.

e.g. Into The Wind catalog (1993) has (c) on page 2. No doubt.
