You wake up shivering. Peering out from under the bench, you can see that a faint mist hugs the trees of the river valley below. You roll up your sleeping bag, and prepare to face the day.

A line is already forming by the time you arrive at the day centre. You wait about twenty minutes before you are ushered inside.
Your friend Susan sits beside you and tells you she is going to a program today that might get you on the list for transitional housing - but it is on the far side of the city, and you will have to go to your outreach worker for a bus ticket first.

You head downtown and find a spot on the sidewalk. After about 3 hours, you have made $11.00. You've had enough and your hands ache from the cold; what now?

You arrive at your outreach worker's office at 9am, but wait twenty minutes to see him. He gives you two bus tickets.

You arrive at Alberta Works - the line stretches down the block.
When you get to the front of the line, the clerk informs you there is no cheque for you.

You arrive at Bissell, and pick out some gear from the Community Closet. Your friend Rick is also there, and you go join him in the drop-in centre, where you shower, then socialize.
You end up attending an afternoon program on job readiness. It leaves you feeling discouraged - others in the session have more experience and you feel you will never be considered 'employable'.

You wait another 2 hours to see your worker. She informs you that your cheque was stopped because you didn't complete your reporting last month. You explain that you were in the hospital for your epilpesy. She agrees to reissue your cheque, but it will take about a week.

You spend some time in the drop-in center, where your friends sympathize with your situation. You feel a little better.

The worker there places you on a list to get a housing worker, and asks you to come back in 3 weeks.

You arrive at the shelter line and manage to get the last spot - you'll sleep inside tonight, and have another meal. This day could have been much worse.
You settle onto the cot and stare at the ceiling...
