Personally, verbosity is not a negative. Having to "Talk to the Man"
is. (Unless, of course, this is a 70's era American Blaxplotation Film,
such as "Shaft", in which case I would just accept having to "Talk to
the Man" as inevitable :-)

I actually consider it a reward when I get more than a single line of
text for a response.

Another comment: To me it is always preferable when a game says
something like -

 >Ask man about car
You approach the mustachioed man and say, "Good Morning, sir"
"Could you tell me what kind of car you happen to drive?"

rather than -

 >Ask man about car
[You greet the man]
"Could you tell me what kind of car you happen to drive?"

Now, depending on your game, the number of characters, etc. it may be
difficult to do it the first way. But if it is possible to do so, it is
a lot more polished.
