TidBITS#384/16-Jun-97

Just when you think you know someone, they do something unexpected. In this
issue, Adam writes about buying a PC, fighting Windows 95, and integrating
them into his Mac network in order to work on his new book. Also, Tonya
begins a multi-part feature about Web publishing software: this week, she
surveys the field and takes a close look at PageSpinner. We also note the
shipping of Virtual PC and a new version of WebCollage.

I am thinking about moving up to 150mhz. Any advice? I've heard a lot of
back and forth on cache cards, any fool proof advice? Finally, Macworks
vs. MacCPU any good or bad news about them?

Subject: [Q] Discussion Group (web based) software for the Mac

I am looking for discussion group software that I can use on my web site.
I have come across Interaction but is there anything else out there. I
would like a web interface with facilities such as moderaed discussions and
ability to archive messages easily. I presently use ListStar and have over
100 groups and would like to transfer these to a more elegant solution.

Try setting up an ftp server on your Mac at work. NetPresenz is a shareware
version that works very well. You can then exchange files with your Mac at
work over the internet. You will need to use an ftp program at home to
access your ftp server at work, such as Fetch.

If you want to actually control your Mac at work from your Mac at home, the
solution is Timbuktu Pro, which you can run on the Mac at work and at home.
You need 2 copies, which are usually sold in pairs. They have a trial
version you can use. Contact Farallon.

Apple Remote Access is another way to connect to your Mac at work if you
have a modem at each end. There is supposed to be a version that runs on
TCPIP, but I don't think it is yet available.

You can also run a Gopher server and a Web server with NetPresenz. You will
need to know the IP address of your Mac at work. Your Mac at home is
probably through a PPP connection, so the IP address changes each time you
connect, making it difficult to run a server from home.

In any case, you set up file sharing with passwords on your Mac at work to
control access.

Hope this helps,

Subject: Epson 800

I'm thinking about buying an Epson 800 and would like to hear from anybody
using that printer.
I presently have a Stylus Pro, which is pretty cranky sometimes, but the
results are usually worth the effort. I don't do any professional or
production work, I just manipulate photos and images for family and
friends, plus the occasional small office project.
I don't live where I can get a chance to compare the Stylus Pro and 800
output, so I'm really interested in whether the difference is so
significant as to justify buying the 800.
Also, is the PostScript option worthwhile?
I will digest replies and post them later.
TIA

Subject: HD Drivers Question

When I got a second 2.1G Quantum HD a whle back, I received an OEM version
of FWB HD Toolkit PE with it. I used it to install and format the new
drive. Without thinking much about it, I also had it update the drivers of
my startup drive, a 1.0G quantum that came with the computer originally.
Now both HDs show up as FWB Async version 1.7.8. Since it was an OEM
version of HD Toolkit, I can't update to 2.0.x for free. I don't know much
about HD drivers, so, what I'm wondering is: Should I make any attempt to
revert to my Apple HD drivers? Should I just leave the current FWB stuff
at OEM version 1.7.8? I know that the Drive Setup 1.2 on the MacOS 7.6
CDROM won't do it, I tried. I do NOT want to reformat my drivers or
anything heavy duty like that. And while I'm asking, what the heck is the
difference detween Drive Setup and Apple HD SC Setup?

My system:
PowerMac 7500/150MHz (daughtercard CPU replacement)
48M RAM/4X CDROM/System 7.6.1

TIA for any info on this or HD drivers in general...

I recently sent in the following query,

>really is of no consequence.

>I'm running a Powerbook 5300 16/750 with 7.5.5 and currently 102 extensions.

>Whenever I start up, the extensions appear as normal along the bottom of

Just to thank the many respondents who assured me this didn't matter at
all. There is a freeware programme called "Iconwrap" sent to me by Al Bloom
which fixes this.

Thanks again for all you help,

Subject: QuickTime - Mpeg

Hi everyone,

I'm new to this list and I don't know if my question could find an answer
on this list, I don't even know if it is the right list... so, forgive me
if it is not the right list and please, direct me to the right one.

This is my problem: I have a Mac Performa 580CD and I want to be able to
play movie from my CD ROM. I downloaded Quicktime 2.5 but it seems that I
need QuickTime M-PEG. I did download that program but when I try to install
it, it says that I need a PowerPC!

Where can I find the right QuickTime M-peg program for my Performa 580CD?
do I need something else?

Thanks a lot to all

Subject: QuickTime Talking heads on PC

I have to distribute a mixed platform information CD (more flexible than an
Intranet as they can take it home etc.!) and have come into problems with a
QuickTime TalkingHead type movie. On the Mac it runs smoothly and simply
with the sound and video well synched. When flattened and played back on a
PC the lip-synch is appalling. At some points the sound lags and at others
it leads so there is now simple option of adding a delay before starting
either the video or sound. I am completely stumped. I've tried
MovieCleaner Pro. I've tried lots of different settings in MoviePLayer
etc, even reducing the datatransfer rate to less than 70KBits/sec. We're
using QT 2.5. We have lots of different PCs with lots of different speed
CDs, all runing Win 95; they all have the same problem to a lesser or
greater extent. Has anyone got any suggestions?

Subject: server to server- email on demand

Sorry for this "cross posted" message but I am at a dead end and NEED
some help.

I have a mail server located in another city. It is currently running
UNIX and is responsible for both our InTERnet and inTRAnet in that
facility. In my facility I would like to create an inTRAnet to handle our
meager needs and give everyone local email accounts. To do this I would
need to access, several times a day, the main server, (preferably an
automated access), to down/upload all the messages. No other access is
needed. I am going to use a Mac IICi for this process running EIMS to
handle the intranet mail stuff. The best solution would be free/shareware
as I am on a shoestring budget.

TIA.....
