higher sampling rate (thus better quality) and shrink them down to even smaller
than the originals recorded at a lower sampling rate. So I've redone the

Copland 7 is a free color scheme for Greg's Kaleidoscope (version 1.0.x) which
makes your Mac desktop somewhat reminiscent of System 7.x, with a Copland-esqe

(after restart), checkboxes, radio buttons, etc. are all made, to as much
an extent as possible, to be a System 7-heavy mixture of the two GUIs. One
nice feature is the ability to change the Accent Color, which changes the

nice-looking feature, if you ask me :) Scott Naness Staten Island, NY

From: hull@cs.uiuc.edu
Subject: [*] Photoshop Dither Filter package, v1.6 (dither-filter-16.hqx)

This is version 1.6 of the Photoshop Dither Filter package, a collection of two
filters for Adobe Photoshop that dither color or grayscale images to black and
white so that they can be printed on a bilevel device, such as a laser
printer.
When printing to a laser printer, the dithering algorithms in these filters may
be superior to the halftoning algorithms that are built into Photoshop.

Why is that? Laser printers suffer from a problem called dot gain: isolated
black pixels on the printed page are larger than they "should" be. In fact, a
certain amount of dot gain is unavoidable: since the dots that a laser printer
makes are round, each dot has to overlap slightly with its neighbors so that
the
laser printer can produce a solid black. What this means is that most laser
printer output is slightly darker than it should be. In practice, most laser
printers produce dots which are somewhat larger than this minimum necessary dot
size, making the problem even worse.

The two filters in the Photoshop Dither Filter package compensate for dot gain
when they halftone an image. For more information see the enclosed README file
or the web page,

http://pertsserver.cs.uiuc.edu/~hull/halftone/

The files in this archive were checked for viruses with Disinfectant 3.6. The
file belongs in gst/grf/pshp/dither-filter-16.hqx and replaces
dither-filter-10.hqx which is already there. The package is freeware.

Steve, wonder where the balance will fall on this one...

I have to say, I've always felt unhappy selling a HP printer - I've had two
Deskwriters and liked them both. Both are still running fine in new
homes...

But I've always felt happy selling Apple low end printers... these include
an Imagewriter II and a StyleWriter 2400... I've always had that "glad to
see the back of you" feeling! (The 2400 with those little flimsy color ink
carts!!)

[This dislike doesn't in any way include the 'classic' LaserWriters... I
was using an NTX the other night, reminded me of my old love for them...
I'm now running a HP LaserJet 6PM myself, but I'm still nostalgic for the
good old heavies...]

So grab that HP 600 - your Mom will love it. (My own mother-in-law has our
2400 - I feel the bad vibes whenever she looks at it!)

Good luck with your Epson - the drivers sound like they need work; and
there are new ones at: http://www.epson.com/connects/ftp1.html

Last year I queried Info-Mac regarding Microsoft File files.

The final answer, provided by Jim Upchurch <jtu3@pobox.com> is that File

File 1.0 can export only as tab-delimited files, in the form of Microsoft
Word-merge files.

Microsoft File doesn't run on 040 Macs with the cache on, reportedly.

I have sucessfully imported the Word-Merge files into Panorama. I created
the Word-Merge files using File 1.0 and an old SE. File 1.0 didn't run on
my LC575 and didn's tried turning the cache off befor throwing File away.

I just recently received a catalog from 1-800-Batteries

they have exactly what you need.

I am not a customer of that company, but my attendance at the recent

that their price for the lithium battery used on the IIsi motherboard
seems a bit high.

Ever since I got a PowerBook 5300ce I have been getting the following

My assumption is that there is some OS confusion as to the PCMCIA

Subject: RFreePP and Modem Speed - Re: Info-Mac Digest V15 #58

Bruce,

I don't use Free PPP. But with "Config PPP", you could actually set the
modem initialization string. I ran into the same problem before
I upgraded the modem to a hardware one.

The modem commands are documented in "Apple Telecom - User's Guide" in
Appendix B.

You could add these few commands to your "AT" string (after "AT") -

"S37=11S46=136"

S36 = 11 Sets attempts to connect at 14.4 K
S46 = 136 Disables V.42bis compression. (138 enables it). Not sure how
to
disable compression and error correction altogether.

With these, it becomes reasonably acceptable.
But better solution would probably be to reinstall the Geoport software
version that connected only upto 14.4 K.

Pl let me know if I could be of any help!

Subject: Sensitive data & equipment Salvage

I'm sure that there are several system administrators out there on
Info-Mac. I would appreciate any insights you folk can give me. I want to
better understand what common business practices are for dealing with
broken stuff with proprietary or sensitive info on them. My questions are
about disposal and possible harvesting of components from failed desktop
equipment for confidentiality, "salvage," or reuse.

1) Lets assume that some of your equipment fails with proprietary data or
privacy-law sensitive data (a copy of your whole payroll, medical records,
etc.) on it. Does anybody do anything special? How do you dispose of
something you can't erase? Do you guys use commercial degaussers? Just
take pliers, pull out the platter, put it in your fireplace in winter, and
dispose/repair the rest?

2) What happens to "the rest" if its not going to be repaired? Are there
any components in used PC/MAC systems today that have enough value to pay
someone to remove from the system?

Environmentally, what is the outcome for the rest? Does the burned-in old
CRT end up in a landfill? Circuit cards too? How does all this work for a
large-scale organization that has thousands of users and dozens of
obsolete/failed systems each day?

I encourage replies to me directly instead of INFO-MAC postings.

Or here's a second opinion <g>...

I'm running 7.6 with the core Now stuff - being keyboard oriented, how
could I not - and not running RamDoubler. SpeedDoubler 1.3.2 is burning
along fine too. Most stable setup I've ever had I think...

I've still got a nagging feeling that until Rhapsody, 1M of VM + real RAM
is better. At least, it gives a few more choices than trebbled virtual
RAM...

Actually, 7.1 and 7.5 install fine on a Mac Plus. I have not tried 7.6.
Of course, a lot of the added stuff (desktop printing, Open Doc, Open
Transport) takes too much RAM, so I have only installed pretty minimal
systems. However, 7.5 is quite stable on the Plus.

Subject: Upgrade possibilities for a MacII (q)

Hello,

I would like to upgrade an old Mac II so that it can run System 7.5, have
the PMMU and install a new 1.4 HD drive. It does not have to do much (run
word and print to a network, email).

What is the cheapest way to do this?

An upgrade to a IIFx is $250, but the price for 64 pin SIMMs that fit in
the FX memory slots are $99/4mb and I need 4 SIMMs.

Is there another way to do this? Is there a card that will upgrade the
MacII to something like a 68040 and have slots for the cheaper memory (72
pin SIMMs)?

Thanks, Daivd
