PRELIMINARY MINUTES, NAMING AND ADDRESSING SUBGROUP MARCH 21, 1991 ======================================= Mats Brunell chairing. The intention of this group was to make a first attempt at finding out what the requirements for registration and naming were within the Nordic countries, and what the status of the needed registration was. BACKGROUND the Internet is dropping the UScentric model that SRI-NIC has adminstered. How do WE want to do it? Connected status has been dropped; we still do not know how we want to police the usage statements and cross-traffic problems. Decnet phase 4 is basically OK - handled by SPAN/HEPnet. An upcoming problem is what to do about the DECNET DNS, which is not the same as the Internet DNS. The ISO environment offers the biggest problems. - NORDUNET and others have made proposals for NSAP allocation - The National GOSIPs will probably mandate some registration - Name registry is required for applications like X.400 and X.500 WHAT DO WE NEED????? APPROACH 2 tracks: - Specify requirement for registry (what to register) - Finding the registry. PRESENT: Harald Tveit Alvestrand Marko Kaittola Jyrki Soini Gunnar Lindberg Haavard Eidnes Marius Olafsson SURIS Peter Hausken Svein-Ove Westberg Reijo Metso Jan Michael Rynning Jan Engvald Per Andersson Roland Hedberg Keld Simonsen Steen Linden Manu Mahonen Erik Lawaets Gardar Nielsen Geir Pedersen NATIONAL SITUATIONS: Sweden: DNS: Bj|rn Eriksson - OK, Matti Rendal X.121 numbers: Solved with the PTT-assigned numbers. (and IXI) Potential problem if someone wants only SUNET contact. X.400/X.500: Nothing known Uoffisielt: Per Andersson, X.400, Roland Hedberg X.500 NSAP: J|ran Bengtsson volunteered a registry, unwillingly, for NORDUNET DECNET Ph.4: OK DECNET DNS: J|ran Bengtsson Official registration authorities: SIS - J|ran has been in touch with them on the NSAP issue. TeleDelta, the PTT, Patentverket and SIS are still not agreed on who needs to do the different registration functions. Norway: DNS: OK, UNINETT has the power. Secretariat registers names. Jens Thomassen allocates subnets; new class Bs go to SRI-NIC. X.121: Televerket X.25 numbers. X.400: STF registry for ADMDs and PRMDs. UNINETT registers organizations inside UNINETT. NSAP: Nothing yet.....probably STF Will start out using NORDUNET NSAPs; H}vard Eidnes chairing. X.500: Nothing yet.... Geir Pedersen registers unofficially. DECNET Ph.4: A coordinator - Hans Bj|rn S{ther. DECNET DNS: Nothing. Iceland: DNS: SURIS naming authority on IP. EUNET converted to domain names. X.400: Started discussing unique ORGs with PTT No DECNET, no ISO. Dennmark: DNS: DKUUG, converted to DNS. X.400: Klaus Hansen maps straight to domainified X.500: DKUUG root server, UNI-C cooperation NSAP: Discussing with Danish Standards, waiting for them. DECNET: Mapped via UNI-C; Ingrid Dahl-Jensen. Finland: DNS: Coordinated by FUNET, Tampere U, Juha Heinanen X.400: Coordinated by the ADMDs. FUNET is ADMD FUMAIL; no registry. X.500: Don't know, probably Juha. X.25: Using PTT numbers DECNET Ph 4: Jyrki Soini NSAPs: Juha for now.....PTTs not very keen on it. Nobody has started thinking about Application Entity Titles or Object Identifiers. **** ACTION: One name per country to report on status within 6 weeks. Mats Brunell is responsible for prompting. Sweden: Mats Brunell: Norway: HTA Finland: Jyrki Soini Iceland: Marius Olavsson Dennmark: Keld Simonsen BRAINSTORMING SESSION This was a lively discussion that was hampered somewhat by the fact that nobody really knew what registration was necessary. All felt that registration "in academia only" was not what we wanted; the desire was to integrate our networks with the non-academic ones as smoothly as possible. Keld Simonsen referred to an ISO registry of company names, maybe hosted at the Austrian PTT, as one "long term target". Mads Brunell voiced that we should help the standard bodies find out what they should register; perhaps the PTTs should be invited to NETF? The Internet seems to be the most straightforward - but Mads aired the possibility that we might need something between the worldwide and the national registries. A "nordic" or "European" level? Nobody really knew why.. X.400: Must register ADMD,PRMD; should Organization be unique? There has been discussion on this in Norway; Harald A will translate the arguments used in the last round. *** ACTION HTA: Translate the stuff on uniqueness of ORG names. (1/2 page) X.500: Needs Object Identifer values allocated. Juha is responsible for allocating the first level domains (currently countries and a special domain for DECNET ph. 5), each nation is responsible for subsidiary registration. **** ACTION JUHA: Half a page describing the interim solution OID: These are explained in a paper by Terje Grimstad. Application Entity Titles: Try to find out something about it **** ACTION Geir and Harald: Write something about it. DECNET DNS Per Andersson has ordered a decstation to set up DECNET DNS. There are religious DECNET users at Chalmers; some people are enthusiastic about it. Are DECNET DNS things SUPPOSED to have glboal scope? Can DECNET DNS domains be merged if they start out differently? **** ACTION Bernhard: Formulate some questions about what it really is. **** ACTION Per: Ask G|ran to write down some answers. The session ended on a feeling that there is much to be learned before we *really* know what we are talking about... Harald Tveit Alvestrand Minutes
