Introduction

NIC.FUNET.FI refers to a cluster of FUNET information services that originally were in one machine intended to serve mainly information related to the networking like many other Network Information Centers around the world do. Very early our idea of collecting files from other international FTP archives to a national "network library" grew in popularity and so in practice we have given a new meaning for the acronym NIC.

It's a virtual center for collecting and organizing all kinds of freely distributable information around the Internet and beoynd. We have now one of the largest collections of freely distributable material in the internet. Although Anonymous FTP is still the most used of our services we have also many other services like WWW, GOPHER, ARCHIE, MAILSERVER, ALEX etc. It's nickname is Hamster...

These services are provided by the Finnish Academic and Research Network FUNET, which primarily is located at the Center for Scientific Computing, CSC, in Otaniemi campus in the town of Espoo in the Greater Helsinki area, Finland. Financing and high level administration is provided by the Ministry of Education. For organizing the information FUNET relies on a large number of volunteer administrators mostly from FUNET member organizations.

Paper mail address: FUNET, Archive server managers Tietotie 6, POBOX 405, FIN-02101 Espoo FINLAND This server group has many names. Its "staff" will always be at `nic.funet.fi', but othervice consider using philosophy: `name by function', thus FTP from ftp.funet.fi.

NOTE: If you have troubles with multiple intermediate reply lines from FTP server, try prefixing your entry for `Password:' prompt with `-'. If your REAL password in THIS system starts with `-', enter TWO `-' characters.
